How to duplicate one PeerSync Configuration on Multiple Machines with the Run at Startup option (Saving Profile on a Network Shared Drive)

Purpose & Scope

To distribute a PeerSync configuration to Multiple Machines; enabling PeerSync to run at Startup and keeping the PeerSync Job(s) Profile on a Network shared drive.

Duplicating PeerSync configuration is only allowed under special licensing agreements. (Contact sales@peersoftware.com if you wish to take advantage of this special setup)

Procedure

PREPARATION:

Run the PeerSync installation on one machine and follow the steps below to set up the specific job(s) you wish to run from Multiple Machines (i.e. Synchronizing from multiple users’ machines to a  backup location such as a Server).

SAVING THE PROFILE ON THE NETWORK

PROS

-You will not need to duplicate the PeerSync Profile on each individual user’s machine.

-The Network administrator will be able to modify any of the Jobs in the Profile at any time and not have to redistribute the file to all the other machines.

CONS

-The users will be able to modify the PeerSync Profile (.snc) unless the file is given read only access.

I. SETUP CONFIGURATION ON ONE MACHINE

1. Start PeerSync.

2. Double Click on the Add Folder Selection at the center of the interface.

3. Specify the Source and Target Folder.

a. To customize the Source and Target to be used on different machines you would want to use the %UserName% variable in the path name.

Example:

Source - C:\Documents and Settings\%UserName%\My Documents\ (this specifies the individual’s My Documents directory).

Target – Z:\BackUp\%UserName%\ (This will specify the individual’s Backup Directory on the Server).

4. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 if you need to set up additional Source/Target Combination.

5. Once you have created the specified Job to be run on the different machines, Save the Profile on a Network shared drive accessible to every other machine you wish to run the profile on.

a. Go to File Save As Profile Name

Test the Profile on one machine for intended outcome and make the necessary changes if needed.

You now have the Profile ready.

6. Create a shortcut to the Startup Folder. This will ensure that the PeerSync will start automatically at log on.

a. Go to File Shortcuts Add to Startup Folder, Select needed options and click OK.

II. CREATE THE INSTALLATION FOLDER FOR OTHER MACHINES

1. To duplicate the PeerSync configuration to the other machines you will need the following files.

a. Ps71.exe (installation file used to install program on the initial machine)

b. PSDEF.cfg (Configuration file created from installation on the initial machine)

c. Shortcut to PeerSync – ProfileName (this file is located in your Startup folder

– see below on how to access this file)

The installation file a (ps71.exe) is the file used for the initial installation. If the file was not saved on the initial machine, you may download the file from the Peer Software Website, save it on your desktop, and then copy the file to the Installation Folder you are creating with the other necessary file above described.

Take file b from your PeerSync directory (commonly C:\Program Files\PeerSync).

The Startup shortcut (c) to the PeerSync profile is the shortcut created in Step 1.6 (During the installation on the other machines, the shortcut will be placed in the startup directory of the specific machine).

To duplicate the shortcut simply go into your startup folder from your PeerSync interface.

-Click on Add to Startup and select Show Startup Folder

-In this window find the PeerSync shortcut previously created.

-Right Click on it and make sure the path to the profile is universal to all the users’ machines (such as using a UNC path to the profile).

-Right Click on it Copy

-Now paste the shortcut on your desktop for later retrieval.

2. Place files (a) and (b) in the Installation Folder (on your desktop or any other directory on your machine that will be easily accessible for retrieval) to be distributed on every other machine you wish to copy the configuration to.

3. Place file (c) in a sub folder of the Installation Folder, named Add to Common Startup.

III. USE THE INSTALLATION FOLDER ON THE OTHER MACHINES

1. Move the Installation Folder (created in Part II) to a Network directory location accessible to all the machines in need of the PeerSync installation and configuration.

Make sure all the above files (from Step II) stay in the same folder when the installation (.exe file) is launched on the other machines. This will assure that the configuration file and the PeerSync shortcut are placed in the necessary directory of the individual’s machine.

Once the Installation Folder has been moved to the Network, install the PeerSync to all the other locations by running the installation file (ps7x.exe).
